OREANDA-NEWS Hungary will continue to purchase Russian oil. This was stated by the leader of the Tisa party, which won the Hungarian parliamentary elections, and the future head of the government of this European Union (EU) country, Peter Magyar. He was quoted by Bloomberg.
He also hopes that after the end of the Ukrainian conflict, the EU will lift sanctions against Russia.
As The New York Times emphasized, Magyar made it clear that he was not going to completely sever ties with Moscow, given Hungary's energy dependence on Russia. It is assumed that Moscow will retain some influence in Hungary.
According to Dmitry Novikov, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Hungary may remain interested in importing Russian energy resources. However, the goodwill of Budapest or Moscow is not enough in this matter, since Kiev can block supplies even when Russia and Hungary are striving to develop relations.
