Turkey has stopped having enough Russian coal

OREANDA-NEWS Over the past week, Russian thermal coal with a calorie content of 6,000 kilocalories per kilogram has risen in price in Turkey by 3.6 percent, to $107 per ton, including insurance and freight. Kommersant writes about this with reference to the Neft Research review.
The main problem in this area is the shortage of goods. Russian exporters have sold out their current volumes, and a problem has arisen with new ones, including due to logistical risks on the Black Sea. So, a week ago, a cargo ship carrying coal from the port of Taman to Trabzon was hit by a drone.
Alternative routes for supplies to Turkey are by rail through Georgia and Azerbaijan, as well as from the Baltic port of Ust-Luga across the Mediterranean Sea. Both of them are much more expensive than the Black Sea one, and the volumes going in this way are minimal.
Shipping from Ust-Luga to Turkey rose in price by 1.9 percent over the week, to $ 26.4 per ton, and the cost of coal itself in the Baltic ports increased by 2.7 percent, to $ 76.1, against an increase in the port of Taman by 0.5 percent, to $84.5. Last year, Russian coal exports to Turkey increased by 34.6 percent, to 35 million tons. This country remains the main buyer of fuel in the western direction.
Pavel Gamov, an expert on the mining and metallurgical industry at the Stolypin Institute of Growth Economics, suggested that due to the sales in June and July, Turkish buyers may lack up to 1.5 million tons of coal in the next two to three months. He expects shipments via the Black Sea to fall by 25-35% year-on-year and by 15-25% month-on-month in July.
Nariman Tayketayev, Director of the Corporate ratings Group of the NKR Agency, said that the profitability of supplies through Ust-Luga is 15-30 dollars per ton lower than through the Black Sea ports. Some of the fuel can be redirected to the Far East, if the railway's capacity allows.
Earlier it was reported that in the first half of the year, coal production in Russia amounted to 212 million tons, which is 2 percent less than a year earlier.
