OREANDA-NEWS. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the American authorities intend to create a coalition to prevent the completion of the gas pipeline Nord Stream 2. The head of American diplomacy said this in an interview with the German newspaper Bild.

According to the politician, Washington believes that Nord Stream 2 poses a risk for Europe, as it becomes dependent on gas coming from Russia. Pompeo noted that the gas pipeline also threatens Ukraine. “We hope that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline won’t be completed. We’re working to make sure we build out a coalition that prevents that from happening,” the head of the State Department resumed.

On September 19, it became known that Friedrich Merz, likely successor to Angela Merkel as German Federal Chancellor, proposed a two-year moratorium on the construction of Nord Stream 2.

The gas pipeline is being built from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Currently, about 160 kilometres of pipes remain to be laid. Construction was suspended due to sanctions imposed by the USA.
