OREANDA-NEWS. Carrefour has today opened its 229th hypermarket in mainland France – in Bayonne. Located in the town's Ametzondo Shopping Centre, the Group's most recent hypermarket showcases its local roots and the close relationship it has with its customers: over more than 5000 m? of sales area, its exclusive food offering places the emphasis firmly on regional products and fresh produce. Carrefour's commitment to local communities makes it one of the region's major economic stakeholders and partners: 162 people have been hired to work at the Bayonne store, making Carrefour one of the largest local employers: the Group employs a total of 1620 people across the whole Pyr?n?es-Atlantiques region.

The Basque influence in the hypermarket's DNA

A great deal of importance is attached to regional products – the store has entered into partnerships with a number of local SMEs. More than 1100 items are stocked in areas completely given over to Basque cuisine (Herriko meat, Hiruak cooked meats, Agour ewe’s cheese, Baskalia dairy products, Gilbert Baradat and Pascal Massonde tinned products, etc.) and tableware (70 cutlery and table linen products). The traditional bakery section has a selection of products made on-site, as well as a range of meats from locally-reared livestock. The hypermarket also has a wide selection of vintage wines, all stored in a refrigerated area, showcasing the richness of the Aquitaine region. As far as the store's design is concerned, it is the work of Basque designer Samuel Accoceberry. The combination of locally-grown Landes pine trees and natural materials creates a warm, light atmosphere for the retail outlet.

A new food experience for customers

Customers are immersed in a traditional "market hall" atmosphere as soon as they enter the store. With a sales area of some 1000 m?, it is entirely dedicated to fresh produce (bakery products, meat, cheese, fish, fruit and vegetables). The store serves as a showcase for the expertise and high quality of our teams: products are made on-site and close links are fostered with customers via workshops and laboratories in the store itself, run by a team of 50 specialists from food-related professions (butchers, cooked meats specialists, cheesemakers, fish sellers, bakers, pastry makers, pizza makers, sushi experts). At the bakery and pastry counter, customers can watch bread and pizza being prepared – from the kneading of the dough right through to the baking process.

There's a new restaurant area where customers can enjoy dishes for any time of the day on site, or they can take them away (coffee, pastries, burgers, home-made snacks, brunches, sandwiches, etc.). These products are all 100% "home-made", cooked on site and on sale at affordable prices.

And the organic section has a wide selection of some 700 products, all produced using organic farming methods. In addition to the food counters, there are also clothing, home accessories, car, DIY and multimedia sections.

Carrefour – a major employer in the Pyr?n?es-Atlantiques region

With 1620 employees across the whole Pyr?n?es-Atlantiques region, Carrefour is a major retailer and actively contributes to the local economy.

In order to give preference to hiring people living close by, Carrefour Bayonne’s managers have worked closely alongside local employment agencies (P?le Emploi Bayonne, Mission Locale Avenir Jeunes Pays Basque, Cap Emploi, P?le D?fense Mobilit? and the Bayonne Town hall). As a result, 162 people have been hired on permanent contracts, and have received 9000 hours of training.

A store designed to protect the environment

The Bayonne hypermarket is the first one in France to be fitted with a refrigeration and air conditioning system that runs on CO2. It features LED lighting and closed refrigeration cabinets, thus minimising the store's environmental impact.

A number of other initiatives have been implemented by the Shopping Centre designed to reduce energy consumption: there is a waste collection centre for recycling, car parks are lit using LED lighting systems, several charging terminals are available for electric vehicles and there is a car-sharing area.
