OREANDA-NEWS By the end of 2024, pollock consumption in Russia reached a record level in more than 20 years, exceeding four kilograms per person. Alexey Burlak, president of the Association of Pollock Miners (ADM), told about this in a comment to RBC.
The Rosrybolovstvo press service explained that the demand for this type of fish has increased due to an increase in its supply to the domestic market due to an increase in catch. Last year, 1.99 million tons of pollock were mined, the most in ten years.
According to Burlak, the increase in consumption can also be explained by marketing policy, or rather, by changing the unsuccessful "image" of pollock. In Soviet times, fish was underestimated, called secondary and even "feline," although it is quite worthy of being presented in restaurants, says Ilya Shestakov, head of Rosrybolovstvo.
Ten years ago, pollock was in fourth or fifth place in popularity among Russians, but now, according to VTSIOM polls, it is in third place, said the head of the ADM. During the year, the fish's recognition increased 1.6 times, to 74 percent, and the share of those who buy it rose to 71 percent.
Russia is the world's largest pollock producer, followed by the United States. In previous years, fishing companies focused on exports, but now the needs of the domestic market have grown significantly, and the trend is only intensifying.
In 2024, the volume of unloading of Russian pollock in foreign ports fell by 14.6 percent, while in Russian ports it increased by 11.5 percent. At the same time, ADM claims that about 30 percent of the pollock produced went to the Russian market, and the rest is accounted for by foreign ones. It is not specified how this statistic can occur with an overall increase in production (a larger reduction in a larger market with less growth leads to an overall decrease).
Earlier it was reported that last year China increased purchases of fillets and other fish meat from Russia by one and a half times compared to 2023, to 86.1 million dollars in monetary terms.
