OREANDA-NEWS  The departments will develop a methodology for detecting sugar substitutes in carbonated drinks and juices, the use of which has increased after the introduction of an excise tax on sugar-containing beverages.

This was announced by the press service of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation following a meeting of the state commission on combating illicit trafficking in industrial products, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov.

"To date, there is no regulatory and methodological documentation defining the methods of detecting such sweeteners. Therefore, following the meeting, it was decided to develop an appropriate GOST," the ministry said in a statement.

During the meeting of the state commission, the results of a study by Roskachestvo of carbonated drinks and juices were presented. "An important result was the identification of an increasing trend in the use of sugar-substitute food additives by manufacturers. This is due to the desire to reduce excise tax payments on beverages containing more than 5% sugar (introduced on July 1, 2023)," the Ministry of Industry and Trade said.
