Poultry meat production in Russia has decreased

OREANDA-NEWS According to the results of the first quarter of 2026, poultry meat production in Russia amounted to 1.63 million tons, which is 2.7 percent lower than in the same period a year earlier, and was an atypical result for the market. The strongest drop was shown by the Tambov region — minus 12.4 percent. In Stavropol, production decreased by 10.5 percent, and in the Leningrad Region — by 9.5 percent. Last year, the industry grew by 2.2 percent, to 6.8 million tons.
Dmitry Krasnov, Managing Director of the Competence Center in the Agro-industrial Complex Reksoft Consulting, explained that the trend is associated with a drop in profitability of manufacturers. Last year, profitability dropped to 3-5 percent. Albina Koryagina, Neo's Business development partner, confirms that the average rate has dropped from 18.7 to 12.7 percent.
The situation was affected by an increase in production costs and outbreaks of avian influenza in certain regions. Agricultural producers cannot shift problems to the cost of final products because of the sellers' position, so they have to reduce production and cut investment projects.
Against this background, the wholesale cost of chicken, which accounts for the majority of poultry meat in Russia, increased by 18 percent year-on-year. In butchering, chicken thigh rose in price by 31 percent, and mechanically deboned minced meat — by 172 percent.
Earlier, the head of the executive Committee of the National Meat Association, Sergey Yushin, said that wholesale prices for chicken meat in Russia are much lower than the global average.
