OREANDA-NEWS By the end of May 2026, the total cost of supplying Turkish tomatoes to Russia has almost halved in monthly terms. RIA Novosti reports on a sharp drop in exports of popular vegetables from a NATO country to the Russian Federation, citing data from the state service of the Mediterranean state.
During the reporting period, Turkish exporters shipped a total of $1.2 million worth of tomatoes to Russia. For comparison, in April the figure was at the level of 2 million. Thus, the cost of supplies has dropped by about 1.7 times.
In May, tomatoes were included in the list of the cheapest food products in Russia. The retail price of a kilogram of these vegetables in the domestic market, according to Rosstat, decreased by an average of 27.1 percent over the last month of spring.
Experts explained such dynamics, among other things, by a decrease in demand. Thus, in January-March, sales of tomatoes in Russia fell by 3 percent. Dmitry Krasnov, Managing Director of Reksoft Consulting, attributed the decline in interest in these vegetables to the growing desire of citizens to save money. As a result, he explained, the demand for more budget items, including potatoes and cabbage, has increased recently.
