The impact of the blockade of the Black Sea on Ukrainian grain exports has been assessed

OREANDA-NEWS The blockade of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports will have a negative impact on the export of grain from the country. This was stated by the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of the Republic, Taras Vysotsky. His words are reported by RBC‑Ukraine.
This strategy pursued by the Russian military has led to prolonged downtime at the ports of Greater Odessa (Odessa, Izmail, and Yuzhny). Even if events in the region develop favourably, Vysotsky lamented, Ukrainian farmers will be able to export no more than half of the grain crops intended for export.
Alternative routes, the minister explained, could provide about 40 percent of the volumes that passed through the aforementioned ports in pre‑crisis times. It is unlikely that more can be achieved, Vysotsky stated. “It is impossible to export large volumes of grain via alternative routes,” he concluded.
Not only grain, but also other important Ukrainian export goods are exported through the ports of Greater Odessa. This includes metals, ore, food, engineering products, and construction materials, noted Vladimir Shchelkunov, head of the National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC Ukraine). He warned that a prolonged blockade of the Black Sea waters could put a tenth of the republic’s economy at risk.
