OREANDA-NEWS  A powerful earthquake has occurred on the island of Flores in Indonesia. This is reported by experts from the European-Mediterranean Seismic Center (EMSC).

The tremors were recorded on Thursday, August 20, at 10:46 a.m. local time (05:46 a.m. Moscow time). Their magnitude reached 5.7, which is considered by seismologists to be a strong earthquake that can lead to moderate damage.

The epicenter of the phenomenon was located 32 kilometers northeast of the mountain town of Ruteng in the west of the island with a population of 34.5 thousand people and 81 kilometers northeast of the fishing town of Labuan Bajo, home to 188 thousand people. The hearth was located at a depth of 10 kilometers. There was no information about casualties or damage.

Earlier, a powerful earthquake occurred off the coast of the Kuril Islands. Aftershocks of magnitude 5.4 were recorded 130 kilometers south of the city of Severo-Kurilsk with a population of about 2,400 people. The source was located at a depth of 40 kilometers.
