OREANDA-NEWS  A powerful earthquake has occurred in Japan. This is reported by TASS with reference to its own correspondent.

It is reported that a nationwide mobile notification system has been activated in the country. Strong tremors could be felt in Tokyo. At first, the National Meteorological Administration of Japan warned of a possible tsunami, but after a few minutes it reported that there was no threat.

In turn, the NHK publication clarifies that the earthquake occurred on August 23 at about two a.m. local time. The epicenter was located in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of 70 kilometers. The magnitude of the earthquake was estimated at 5.9.

Earlier, an earthquake occurred on the island of Java in Indonesia. This was reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center.
