OREANDA-NEWS   A powerful 5.0 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Mexico on Tuesday, January 20. This is reported on the website of the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).

The tremors occurred at 05:30 local time (14:30 Moscow time). The epicenter was located 21 kilometers southwest of the village of El Morro with a population of about 2.6 thousand people. The earthquake was centered at a depth of 42 kilometers.

Earlier in the day, an even stronger earthquake was recorded in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Papua New Guinea. Its magnitude was estimated by seismologists at 5.9. The threat of a tsunami was not announced.
