OREANDA-NEWS The United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on 20 individuals and five legal entities as part of the world's first sanctions regime targeting organizers of illegal immigration, according to a government statement published on its website.
In the statement, it was announced that today, leaders of gangs, key intermediaries, and suppliers of equipment used for the illegal transportation of people were placed under sanctions for their involvement in illegal migration.
These sanctions include the freezing of their assets.
The sanctioned entities are located in Asia, the Middle East, the Balkan region, and North Africa, and are accused of supplying boats used for illegal immigration, providing false passports, and facilitating illegal transfers through the informal hawala financial system.
Additionally, sanctions have been imposed on those directly involved in importing migrants by truck and boat, as well as on leaders of criminal networks.
The crisis with migrants crossing the English Channel has been ongoing in the UK since 2018. In early July, the British Interior Ministry announced that more than 20,000 illegal migrants had reached the shores of Great Britain through the English Channel since the beginning of the year. The number of illegal immigrants who arrived in the kingdom in the first half of the year broke the record for previous years.
In May, Nigel Farage, leader of the right-wing populist party Reform UK, called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to declare a national security emergency due to the large number of illegal migrants arriving in the country. Starmer acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, but did not answer the question directly.
Illegal migrants often seek any opportunity to enter the UK and gain refugee status, which provides access to financial assistance and social programs. In 2024, over 36,800 illegal immigrants arrived in the country by boat across the English Channel, a quarter more than the previous year. A record number was recorded in 2022, with over 45,700 migrants reaching British shores. The UK government spends several million pounds per day accommodating asylum seekers in hotels.
