Bulgaria's Constitutional Court approves President Radev's resignation

OREANDA-NEWS The Constitutional Court of Bulgaria has officially approved the resignation of President Rumen Radev. According to the court's decision, his powers will expire prematurely on January 23, 2026. This is reported by TASS.
According to the Constitution, Vice-President Iliyana Yotova automatically assumed the post of head of state. She became the first woman to hold the post of president in the history of Bulgaria.
Radev's imminent resignation became known on January 19. According to the Bulgarian Constitution, the president can resign, after which the post is occupied by the Vice President, who remains in office until the end of his term.
In December 2025, former Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov resigned along with his government less than a year after taking office amid weeks of massive street protests against the government's economic policies and its inability to fight corruption.
