OREANDA-NEWS The change of phases of ocean currents on El Nino will not greatly affect the weather in Russia in 2023, climatologist Alexey Kokorin told RIA Novosti.

Formerly the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) The UN has published a forecast that global temperatures could reach record high levels over the next five years. This will be facilitated by the anthropogenic factor, that is, greenhouse gases, and the natural factor — the change of phases of ocean currents from La Niña to El Niño.

"We have a very indirect influence. We cannot say that this summer or autumn, or the year as a whole will be warmer because of this effect, we are still far away, in the northern hemisphere, and on average on the globe - of course, yes," said Kokorin.

He stressed that the change of phases of ocean currents will affect not only the average temperature on the planet, but also the precipitation regime.

The peculiarity of the phase change of ocean currents is that during La Niña, heat from the atmosphere intensely goes into the ocean, and during El Niño, the flow goes in the opposite direction.

According to Kokorin, the phase change process will begin in the second half of 2023.
