OREANDA-NEWS The fires raging in Canada are at risk of becoming record-breaking. This was stated to RIA Novosti by Lori Daniels, Professor of the Department of Forestry and Environmental Sciences at the University of British Columbia.
As the climatologist suggests, the landscape fires that broke out in Canada in May may be among the largest in the history of observations. "This year will be one of the record—breaking fires in Canada," he commented. According to Daniels, there are still six to eight weeks left before the end of the period of increased fire danger, despite the fact that the current flame spread rates are already above average.
The fires, which arose against the background of abnormal heat and dry thunderstorms, have already covered more than three million hectares and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people. Ontario suffered the most from the fire, where the area of burnt-out territories has already exceeded 728 thousand hectares. Smoke from the fire covered not only Canada, but also reached New York, located 400 kilometers from the border.
The wildfires took France by surprise, becoming the largest in half a century. According to the latest data, the fire area is 115,000 hectares. In the Gironde department, which was affected by the flames, the number of evacuees exceeded 220,000 people. The fire came close to defense and scientific facilities in the west of Bordeaux, where they produce fuel for M51 ballistic missiles and rocket engines.
