OREANDA-NEWS The civil initiative demanding the closure of the Russian consulate in the Aland Islands (autonomy within Finland) has reached the required 50,000 votes and will be submitted to the Finnish parliament, according to the website of the country's civil initiatives.

"The Russian consulate should be abolished in the Aland Islands. Since Finland is now a member of NATO, this consulate restricts and endangers the security of Finland," the description of the initiative says.

From October 1, one diplomatic representation of Finland (Embassy in Moscow) will operate in Russia. While Russia has two diplomatic missions in Finland: an embassy in Helsinki and a consulate in Mariehamn, the capital of the Aland Islands.

The Aland Islands were demilitarized for the first time after the Crimean War in 1856 at peace talks in Paris.
Demilitarization was confirmed by the League of Nations in 1921. The website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland says that at the same time, a commitment was made to conclude a multilateral agreement on the demilitarization and neutralization of the Aland Islands, the so-called Aland Treaty.
