OREANDA-NEWS  Israel intends to close the British consulate in Jerusalem on Thursday, but will not expel British diplomats, the Times newspaper writes.

The crisis in relations between London and Tel Aviv worsened in early September following Britain's decision to ban trade with Jewish settlements in the West Bank, which are considered illegal under international law. In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Saar announced a decision to close the British consulate in East Jerusalem. It was reported that the decision should be executed within 30 days, that is, no later than October 8. Another Israeli response was the removal of British representatives from the international center for assistance and monitoring of the situation in Gaza in Kiryat Gat.

"Israel intends to close the British consulate in Jerusalem on Thursday in response to the UK's ban on trade with settlements... Israel will not expel diplomats or send them and their families home. He believes that instead they should work from the British Embassy in Tel Aviv," the report says.
According to the newspaper, the diplomatic status of the consulate will be canceled, which is why about 30 diplomats will not be able to legally work in this building.

Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank of the Jordan River is one of the main problems in Israel's relations with the international community and the Palestinian Authority. In addition, these steps serve as one of the obstacles in the search for peace with the Palestinians, who perceive Jewish settlement activities as a policy of consolidating the Jewish state in the Palestinian territories.
