OREANDA-NEWS  The Latvian authorities cannot ban the transit of Russian grain or increase the fee for using their railway infrastructure by 300 percent. This recognition was made by the country's Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs during a conversation with journalists, RIA Novosti writes.

"At the moment, Latvia cannot raise the fee for using the railway infrastructure for the transit of Russian grain by 300 percent or ban it completely," he said.

Riga also found out that the European Union has exclusive powers in tariffs and transit. The prime minister added that he intends to discuss this issue in Brussels next week.

Earlier, Andris Kulbergs made a speech after the elections to the Seimas, where he threatened Russia and asked for money from the European Union. According to him, the eastern flank of NATO — the Baltic states, Finland, Poland and Romania — invests more in defense than almost any other country in Europe. The politician believes that Latvia needs a stronger economy to protect the EU borders.

At the end of September, the Sejm (Parliament) Lithuania also approved the lifting of the ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons on the territory of the republic. The refusal implies an amendment to the Constitution.
