OREANDA-NEWS. Member of the European Parliament Thierry Mariani pointed out the erroneousness of the EU policy towards Belarus.

In an interview with Lenta.Ru on Tuesday, December 14, the politician stressed that Brussels made a mistake by imposing sanctions against Minsk and personally the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko after the presidential elections in August 2020.

According to him, he supports the decision of the Polish authorities not to let migrants into the territory of the European Union, but called the behavior of Europe naive in the assumption that Lukashenka will not respond to the sanctions in any way.

"You know, the Bible says:" Whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other as well. " I'm not sure that Lukashenka has read this far, ”Mariani said.

The French politician suggested that it would be more accurate to hold meetings with the opposition, since the imposition of sanctions did not bring the desired results. He added that Lukashenka is accused in Europe of a hybrid war, forgetting that "they themselves started it - with sanctions."

The migration crisis on the border of Belarus and the European Union began at the end of May 2021. Large groups of illegal migrants from Africa and the Middle East began to storm the borders of Lithuania, Poland and Latvia in the hope of obtaining asylum.

The crisis escalated on November 16, when some of the refugees tried to break into Poland. The Polish side used special means, as a result of which the military, migrants and journalists were injured. Lukashenka gave instructions to place illegal immigrants in the logistics center.

In Poland, they announced a tough attack on the border for the first time in 30 years.
