OREANDA-NEWS  The geomagnetic storm that lasted on Earth for 42 hours has ended, it has become the second strongest in the last five years, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Institute of Space Research (IKI) and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISSF) of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported.

"The geomagnetic event is over. It has become the second most powerful in the last five years. Based on the incoming data, the storm has finally ended," the report says.

According to the laboratory, the geomagnetic storm lasted 42 hours and became the strongest this year.

They reported that in the current solar cycle, this event became the second most powerful after the G5.0 storm of the highest level (on a five-point scale) on May 10-12, 2024.

"At the moment, there is a residual increased speed of the solar wind, about 600 km/s, exceeding the usual values by about 1.5 times, but with the exception of this, all the parameters of the interplanetary plasma have returned to normal," the scientists reported.

"There is a very strong asymmetry of activity in the Sun at the moment. Almost all the major centers are gathered on one half of the star, which, due to the rotation of the Sun, then turns towards the Earth, then goes to the opposite side. At the moment, a calm sunny side is approaching the Earth, and this gives hope for at least a week or even two weeks of respite," the laboratory said in a statement.
