OREANDA-NEWS Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said he would be very pleased if the CSTO excluded Yerevan from the association.
"In any case, it would free us from the dilemma of whether to withdraw or not. <...> The Charter provides for the exclusion of the country from the organization," he said, presenting the government's program in Parliament.
In the next five years, Yerevan has no plans to step up its work and return to the CSTO, the politician added.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on these words, said that if Armenia no longer wants to participate in such an important organization for ensuring regional security, then it can leave it.
In February 2024, Pashinyan announced the freezing of the republic's participation in the CSTO. He used the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh as an excuse. According to the Prime minister, at least two countries participating in the Treaty allegedly helped Azerbaijan prepare for war with Armenia and only "imitated assistance to Yerevan." He did not name specific states, but stated that the military actions of those years were allegedly aimed at eliminating the independence of the republic.
In turn, the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, recalled that in September 2022, the CSTO quickly formed and sent an assessment mission of the secretariat and the Joint Headquarters of the organization to the border regions of Armenia. As a result, the Collective Security Council decided to deploy a monitoring group in the country, but the authorities in Yerevan rejected it and preferred to invite EU representatives.
