Pentagon Has Denied Reports of the Beginning of Withdrawal of US Troops from Iraq
On Monday, the Iraqi television channel, referring to a statement by Ali al-Ghanimi, a member of the Iraqi parliament’s defense and security committee, said the US had begun withdrawing its troops from 15 military bases in Iraq. According to the deputy, the Americans will limit their presence to two large bases - near the city of Erbil in the north of the country and Ain al-Assad air base.
On January 5, two days after a US missile strike in the Baghdad airport area, which killed the commander of the Al-Quds special forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (elite units of the Iranian Armed Forces) Kassem Suleimani, the Iraqi parliament passed a resolution demanding a complete withdrawal from countries of all foreign troops.
The United States still refuses to comply with this decision of the Iraqi parliament, and US President Donald Trump threatened Iraq with "unprecedented sanctions" in response to possible steps by Baghdad to withdraw United States forces from the territory of the republic.
