OREANDA-NEWS For the first time since 2024, Russia imported a batch of sugar from Brazil. RIA Novosti reports on the first purchase of this type of product from the BRICS country in almost two years, citing data from the local statistical service.
The cost of cane sugar supplies from the Latin American country reached $2.5 million in May 2026. The result was the highest since April 2024, when the export price was $25 million.
In terms of imports, Russia has lagged far behind the key buyers of Brazilian sugar. In the last month of spring, Bangladesh (86 million dollars), Nigeria (74.5 million) and Algeria (70.2 million) bought the most. Jordan (62 million) and Saudi Arabia (61.2 million) are also among the top 5 major importers. Russia was only in the third ten.
Brazil has also noticeably increased shipments of peanuts to the Russian market recently. By the end of April, the value of exports of these products increased by 14.5 percent compared to March and reached almost eight million dollars in monetary terms. This dynamic has allowed Russia to retain its status as the leading buyer of Brazilian peanuts.
