OREANDA-NEWS  At the beginning of the second half of August, the cost of shipping a standard 40-foot container (FEU) from China to Russia exceeded 9 thousand dollars for the first time since March 2023. This is reported by Kommersant with reference to the review of the Center for Price Indices (CIC).

On Monday, August 17, the price of delivery on the Shanghai — Moscow route increased by 77 percent year-on-year. The achieved result turned out to be a record for the last 3.5 years, analysts said.

Experts cited an increase in the cost of multimodal transportation through the ports of the Far East as the main reason for this dynamic. The situation was also affected by the increase in imports of Chinese goods and the continuing geopolitical risks along the route, Delo explained. Analytics".

In the next few months, interest rates will continue to rise against the background of limited supply, the Central Bank expects. However, the dynamics will be more restrained than at the height of August, says Roman Shagalov, senior analyst at the center. "The volume of the cargo base remains high, places on many shipping lines are completely booked for at least a month in advance," he stated.

In January-July, the trade turnover between Russia and China increased by more than a quarter year-on-year. Imports of Chinese goods jumped by 29.5 percent during this time, and in July they updated a monthly record, exceeding $ 12 billion.

However, Russia still falls far short of China's main economic partners in terms of trade turnover. The main factors constraining the growth of bilateral trade remain a relatively limited structure (Russia supplies China mainly with energy resources at low prices, and the import of equipment from China in most cases does not imply the transfer of production technologies), problems with payments and the fear of banks and companies from the Asian country to fall under secondary Western sanctions.
