OREANDA-NEWS  Michael McGrath, Commissioner of the European Union (EU) for Justice and the Rule of Law, warned Slovakia about the consequences of constitutional amendments that give priority to national legislation over the legislation of the European Union. This is reported by Bloomberg.

According to him, the European Commission (EC) is finalizing an assessment of the situation and will announce its decision "as soon as possible." He stressed the bloc's position that EU legislation has priority for all 27 member states.

"I want to make it completely clear: the supremacy of EU law must be respected in all cases on its territory," McGrath said.

Earlier, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that Slovakia would have to defend its interests in a conflict with the European Commission over amendments to the country's Constitution. He stressed that the country needs to protect its national identity and traditions, otherwise it risks being "absorbed" by the EU.
