OREANDA-NEWS The European Union (EU) is considering the possibility of Hungary's withdrawal from the union. This option was proposed by Politico as one of the ways the bloc can deal with Hungary if Prime Minister Viktor Orban wins the election.
It is noted that no country has yet been excluded from the EU, and this topic remains taboo in the association.
At the same time, the European diplomat, in an interview with the publication, pointed to a document that talks about the possibility of using the withdrawal clause from the EU, namely Article 50, which the UK invoked when Brexit began, or other legal loopholes to "get away from Hungary."
The diplomat stressed that this is "unrealistic, but it sounds good," adding that "a few years ago, this scenario was discussed in theory, and now it is being heard again."
"There is no clause on exclusion from the EU in the treaties, and I do not see our interest in this. What will Hungary do in this case? She will fall under the influence of Russia," said another source of the publication.
As another "way", Politico suggested that the EU could switch to the principle of a qualified majority in voting. According to this principle, 55 percent of the member States representing 65 percent of the total population of the association should vote for the decision.
