OREANDA-NEWS  Even if the United States lifts anti-Russian sanctions, the European Union will pursue its own sanctions policy and introduce the 16th package, European Commissioner for Economic Affairs Valdis Dombrovskis said.

He explained this by saying that "the EU must take matters of its own security into its own hands," and this also applies to sanctions policy.

When asked by reporters whether the EU would lift its sanctions against Russia if the United States began to lift them in return for a cease-fire, Dombrovskis replied: "Do you know that work is currently underway on the 16th package?"

The day before, Reuters columnist Pierre Brianson wrote that the possible lifting of sanctions against Russia by the decision of the administration of US President Donald Trump could put Washington's allies in Europe in a difficult position.
