OREANDA-NEWS  The only icebreaker of the British Royal Navy returned to the port of Devonport due to a double engine malfunction. The Telegraph writes about this.

"The UK was left without its most important ice patrol ship after its engine failed at sea," the article emphasizes.

The ship had to be towed shortly after leaving the UK. According to the newspaper, the cause of the breakdown could be maintenance problems. The agency is currently assessing the possibility of repairs.

The absence of an icebreaker may prevent London from fulfilling its obligations under the Antarctic Treaty. The vessel was built in Norway in 2000. The previous icebreaker HMS Endurance suffered a hole in 2008.

In 2025, the British media reported that Russia has the world's only operational nuclear icebreaker fleet. For comparison, experts cited Finland, Canada and Sweden, which have one powerful icebreaker, while the United States has only two obsolete vessels. In turn, the UK has only two icebreakers.

Prior to that, Washington noted that the United States has significantly fewer icebreakers than Russia. As noted, such a disappointing state of affairs for the United States is ridiculous.
