OREANDA-NEWS The waters of the Gulf of Finland may turn green in the coming days. This was warned in the North-Western Department of Rosprirodnadzor.

This color of the water can be triggered by hot weather. Already, the water in the Gulf of Finland has warmed up to plus 21 degrees. At this temperature, blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, begin to grow rapidly, especially in shallow water. Thanks to them, the reservoir can acquire a bright green shade, gray-blue or swampy. Sometimes obsolete algae, accumulating, create dark clumps that visually resemble oil slicks.

The massive blooming of such algae deprives aquatic inhabitants of oxygen, sometimes leading to real oxygen starvation. Cyanobacteria also produce toxins — it is dangerous to swim in such reservoirs.

Earlier, the landscaping of the river was complained about in the Rostov region. The local Gnilusha River has changed color due to wastewater discharge, residents of Krasny Sulin are sure. They claim that sometimes the river hisses due to the accumulation of waste.
