OREANDA-NEWS  The El Nino climatic phenomenon helps weather forecasters make seasonal weather forecasts and can affect the weather in a number of regions of Russia. This was stated by Candidate of chemical Sciences, associate professor at the Institute of Ecology of the RUDN University Yuri Khitev in a conversation with RT.

The expert noted that one of the factors taken into account in long-term forecasts is the fluctuation in water temperature in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. "So, during El Nino, when the ocean water gets warmer than usual, warmer winters may occur in Siberia and the Far East. Although in some years it can also intensify the Siberian anticyclone and bring severe frosts," he explained. Meanwhile, Khitev noted, El Nino has a weaker effect on Russia than, for example, on North America.

A number of other factors that meteorologists pay attention to when making seasonal forecasts include the state of the Arctic ice, the position and intensity of the polar vortex, the North Atlantic oscillation and changes in ocean surface temperature, the ecologist concluded.

Earlier, Saji Hamid, a professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Aizu University, assured that there would be no super El Nino in 2026.
