OREANDA-NEWS The number of earthquake victims in Afghanistan has grown to 20 people, and the total number of victims has reached 300. This is reported by Reuters with reference to the Ministry of Health of the country.
According to experts from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, an earthquake of magnitude 6.3 occurred in the central part of Afghanistan. The natural phenomenon was recorded 45 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Mazar-I-Sharif, its source was located at a depth of 10 kilometers. The echoes of the earthquake affected Kabul, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Iran and even India.
The Afghan cities of Aybak, Mazar-I-Sharif and Maimana were the hardest hit. A mountain collapse occurred in Samangan province, blocking a section of the Balkh—Samangan highway in the Tashgurgan Gorge area. In Mazar-I—Sharif, the Blue Mosque, also known as the Ali Mausoleum, a symbol and a business card of the city, partially collapsed.
Experts warn that a major earthquake is threatening due to the fracture of the tectonic plate in the United States. Scientists fear that an earthquake in the Cascadia subduction zone, where the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate is sinking under the North American Plate, "will become the largest disaster in the history of North America."
