OREANDA-NEWS  The statement by the United States Ambassador to Japan, George Glass, on Tokyo's sovereignty over the Southern Kuril Islands encourages Japanese revanchism and revisionism. Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, commented on the position of the US representative.

"With such statements, the American diplomat is essentially only encouraging Japanese revanchism and revisionism, which, by the way, are causing growing concern among almost all of Japan's neighbors," she said.

Zakharova recalled that the Southern Kuril Islands were transferred to the USSR following the results of World War II and according to the agreements of the allied powers, including the United States. The diplomat stressed that Russia's sovereignty and jurisdiction over the islands are beyond doubt.

Earlier, the US ambassador to Japan said that Washington recognizes Tokyo's sovereignty over the so-called northern territories. Earlier, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the Kuril Islands and called them "native Japanese territory."
