OREANDA-NEWS In the first two months of 2026, Russia's federal budget deficit reached 5.57 trillion rubles. Interfax writes about this with reference to the report of the Federal Treasury on budget execution on March 1.
This result is about one and a half times more than the estimate of the Ministry of Finance, which reported a deficit of 3.45 trillion rubles in January-February.
The budget law for 2026 plans a deficit of 3.786 trillion rubles for the first 12 months.
Such a significant difference is due to the discrepancy in income. According to the Treasury, they amounted to 2.5 trillion rubles, and according to the Ministry of Finance — 4.77 trillion. One of the explanations is called the calendar. The last day of February fell on a Saturday, so part of the tax payments could technically take place on March 2, that is, on the first working day.
The expenses in the two estimates differ slightly — 8.09 trillion rubles from the Treasury against 8.22 trillion from the Ministry of Finance.
Earlier, the Institute for Economic Policy (IEP) warned of the growing risks of a significant increase in the budget deficit, because revenues continue to lag behind schedule, while expenditures, on the contrary, are ahead of schedule. At the same time, we are talking not only about problems with oil and gas revenues, but also about a drop in non-oil and gas revenues compared to expectations.
