OREANDA-NEWS. In the capital of El Salvador, San Salvador, there were protests of the civilian population against the government's decision to recognize bitcoin as the official currency of the state, the BBC reports.

«We are experiencing a deep financial crisis with a high cost of living and unemployment. Meanwhile, the government's reaction, instead of a serious economic policy, is to accept bitcoin as a legal means of payment», said opposition deputy of parliament Claudia Ortiz.

As part of the protest, demonstrators burned an ATM for cryptocurrency transactions, and also showed posters with the words «We are deceived by bitcoin». In addition to recognizing the cryptocurrency, the protesters also criticized the decision of the authorities to carry out a constitutional reform and double the number of personnel of the armed forces of the republic. The protesters condemned the decision of the country's Supreme Court allowing the current President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukela, to be re-elected for a presidential term.
