OREANDA-NEWS The Aurora borealis lit up the sky over Russian cities amid strong magnetic storms. This was reported by experts from the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Institute of Space Research (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The first reports of the fascinating natural phenomenon began to come from the Leningrad and Novgorod regions. In addition, residents of St. Petersburg, Novy Urengoy and Petrozavodsk noticed the aurora borealis.
On the night of September 2, auroras were recorded in some places in the northwestern regions of Russia, which mostly shifted towards Scandinavia and Canada. Due to the duration of the geomagnetic storm, the phenomenon can still be seen.
Earlier, astronomers clarified that due to strong magnetic storms, auroras can be visible not only in the northern, but also in the middle latitudes, including in Moscow and Tver.
