OREANDA-NEWS The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has opened an investigation into the TikTok social network owned by Chinese ByteDance on the issue of storing data of European users in China, writes Reuters.
In April, TikTok revealed that some data was temporarily stored on Chinese servers. In May, the Irish regulator, concerned about how it protects the information of Europeans, fined the company 530 million euros. It was noted that some information was remotely accessible to TikTok staff in China.
TikTok is in the process of appealing the fine decision. According to the company, this DPC decision could become a precedent with large-scale consequences for companies and entire industries in Europe.
Meanwhile, the new investigation by the regulator will directly relate to data storage in China. This issue was not considered in the previous investigation.
The DPC is the main agency overseeing TikTok's activities in the EU. The company's European headquarters is located in Ireland.
