OREANDA-NEWS  The head of the Shirak Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Mikael Ajapakhyan, has been detained as part of a criminal case calling for the overthrow of power in the country, and the investigation is requesting his arrest. This was reported by TASS with reference to his lawyer Ara Zohrabyan.

"A criminal case has been opened under part 2 of Article 422 of the Criminal Code of Armenia. The investigator petitioned the court to choose a preventive measure in the form of the archbishop's detention," the statement said.

The lawyer noted that there was obviously another illegal action within the framework of the government's anti-church policy, which resulted in an unprecedented invasion of the territory of the Mother See by NSS and police officers.

On the morning of June 27, searches of representatives of the clergy began in Armenia. No arrests have been reported yet.

The public conflict between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and representatives of the clergy began in May. The head of the Cabinet of Ministers accused them of nepotism and an attempt to seize power in the country.
