OREANDA-NEWS The world's first nuclear power system with a closed fuel cycle will appear in Russia by 2030, it will be launched in the Tomsk region. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the revolutionary development of domestic nuclear scientists, RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

No one in the world has made analogues of the project being prepared for launch in Russia, the head of state noted. "I think Russia can be proud of this," the president said during a speech at the international Moscow forum "World Atomic Week."

A closed-cycle nuclear power system is a system in which spent nuclear fuel is recycled for reuse of its components. Currently, the world uses mainly a linear cycle. Under this scheme, spent nuclear fuel containing radioactive waste is decommissioned and then sent to safe storage tanks. This requires additional costs from companies.
