St. Petersburg is approaching a new weather record

OREANDA-NEWS St. Petersburg almost set a new weather record. Mikhail Leus, a leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, told about this in his Telegram channel.
According to the forecaster's observations, there has been almost no thaw this winter — such a situation is atypical for the St. Petersburg weather. There has not been such a thaw-free winter in the Northern Capital for the last half century: the last time thaws were recorded in either January or February was only 55 years ago. The temperature had never risen above zero before, either only in January (it was in 1987, 1996, 2004 and 2010), or in February (in 1985, 1986, 1994 and 2018).
The winter of 2026 was just two days short of the record. By the end of February, the thermometers in St. Petersburg nevertheless overcame the zero mark and reached plus 0.3 degrees. Thus, as Leus concluded, one of the longest non-warming periods in the meteorological history of St. Petersburg was interrupted.
The thaw that has begun will last in the city until Monday, March 2. Then the temperature will drop slightly: at night, the indicator will range from minus 1 to minus 6 degrees, but during the day the thermometer will still exceed zero, rising to plus 1-4 degrees.
Earlier, Moscow broke another snow record. The capital's snowdrifts have updated the daily record, the sixth in February and the eighth since the beginning of the year: the height of the snow cover reached 72 centimeters.
