"We hadn't been in the sky for 25 minutes when we heard a sound like a lightning strike or an explosion,— passenger Ruth Sorensen told the newspaper. "We heard the engine shut down after that, and flames came out."
The traveler added that her fellow travelers held hands and comforted each other, preparing for the worst. Due to the fire, the pilots declared an emergency and returned to the departure airport, where fire trucks met the flight. The landing was successful.
"We slept on the airport floor from 3:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. to catch a new Sun Country flight and return home," Sorensen confessed.
In June, the engine of an American Airlines passenger jet caught fire in the sky and was captured on video. Representatives of the carrier said that shortly after takeoff, the aircraft returned to the departure airport due to a mechanical malfunction.
