OREANDA-NEWS Urgent measures need to be taken in Russia due to the rapidly spreading meningococcal infection. 1.2 thousand cases of infection have already been recorded.
At the same time, 600 cases of infection were diagnosed in the whole of 2024. Ekaterina Stepanova, an infectious disease specialist and Candidate of Medical Sciences, pointed out that this trend indicates the need to introduce additional measures, in particular vaccination.
Her colleague Mikhail Favorov agreed with Stepanova, who also called for vaccination against this infection to be included in the vaccination calendar. It is better to carry it out with certain vaccines that will give immunity to all serotypes. Such tools have already been invented, the specialist emphasized.
Pediatrician Lilit Arakelyan explained the increase in cases of meningococcal infection by several factors. For example, some parents missed or postponed vaccinations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the number of imported cases of infection began to grow after increased travel abroad, as well as the number of opponents of vaccination.
"What should I do? Vaccination is the only way to prevent it. Vaccines against meningococcal groups A, C, W, Y, and B are registered and available in Russia," the specialist concluded.
