OREANDA-NEWS The St. Petersburg City Court sentenced Ivan Kartashov, a local resident who collaborated with the CIA, to 14 years in prison.
The man was found guilty of treason. He was also fined 400 thousand rubles. His trial was held behind closed doors due to the presence of the "Top secret" stamp on the case file.
Kartashov acknowledged the factual circumstances, but stated that he wanted to deceive the American side and get the money. He insists that he did not betray his homeland. According to the investigation, the Petersburger entered into correspondence with the CIA, as he disagreed with the political course of the country and its activities, and also wanted to change the state regime in the country. He appealed to a Russian citizen with a request to bring him together with employees of foreign intelligence services in order to sell classified documentation regarding a certain object and UAV complexes.
However, the Russian special services became aware of Kartashov's plans, and during an operational experiment, his correspondence with the CIA and sending them electronic files were documented.
Earlier it was reported that a court in Khabarovsk had detained an employee of a government agency accused of treason.
