OREANDA-NEWS The eruption of Semeru volcano, located in the east of the Indonesian island of Java, occurred on Wednesday morning, the volcano spewed a column of ash 800 meters high, the Indonesian ANTARA news agency reports.
"The eruption of the Semeru volcano occurred on Wednesday at 7.21 a.m. local time (3.21 Moscow time - ed.). The height of the ash column was observed at an altitude of about 800 meters above the summit, or 4,476 meters above sea level," Ria Alfian, an employee of the Semeru Sigit volcano observation post, said on Wednesday.
According to officials, the 3,676-meter-high mountain had erupted three times in the previous 24 hours. However, visual observations of these eruptions were not carried out due to fog.
Alfian reported that Semeru volcano remains in a state of alert (level II). In this regard, the National Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Reduction has issued a number of recommendations, including prohibiting the population from engaging in any activity in the southeastern sector from the top of the volcano.
The Center also called on the population to remain vigilant in connection with the possibility of the formation of lava avalanches and cold lava flows along rivers and valleys originating at the top of the Semeru volcano.
