OREANDA-NEWS The United States has suspended the imposition of duties on Mexican goods for a month, the president of the North American country, Claudia Sheinbaum, said on the social network X following a conversation with the head of the White House, Donald Trump.
"We had a good conversation with President Trump — with great respect for our relations and sovereignty, we have reached a series of agreements. Duties are suspended for a month starting today," she wrote.
This information was confirmed by the US president, noting that negotiations would take place within the prescribed period, which would be attended by him personally, as well as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Latnick and senior representatives of Mexico.
In addition, according to the American leader, during the conversation, his colleague agreed to immediately send ten thousand Mexican soldiers to the border between the states. "These military personnel will be specially appointed to stop the flow of fentanyl and illegal migrants into our country," the head of the White House said.
Trump signed decrees on the introduction of import duties of 25 percent on all goods from Mexico and Canada from February 4, in the second case, energy resources are the exception, and the rate on them will be ten percent. The United States is also imposing ten percent tariffs on Chinese products in addition to those already in effect.
As noted by White House Economic Adviser Kevin Hassett, these measures are aimed at combating drug trafficking, and not at unleashing a trade war. He pointed out that the flow of drugs, in particular fentanyl, enters the United States through the borders with Canada and Mexico, and last year alone, about 100,000 Americans died because of it.
