OREANDA-NEWS. Swedish ecological activist Greta Thunberg became Person of the Year according to Time magazine. “She has succeeded in creating a global attitudinal shift, transforming millions of vague, middle-of-the-night anxieties into a worldwide movement calling for urgent change,” Time release says.

Before the 16 year old Thunberg, the youngest owner of this title was Charles Lindbergh: Time named him the Person of the Year in 1927, when the 25 year old pilot became the first who made a transatlantic flight alone.

This year, US President Donald Trump, US House of Representatives’ Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, American football player Megan Rapinoe, Chinese leader Xi Jinping, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Trump’s lawyer Rudolph Giuliani, protesters in Hong Kong and an anonymous informant who complained about Trump after his conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pretended to a high title.

In August 2018, Thunberg went to the Swedish parliament with the demand to pay attention to the problem of global warming and implement the Paris Agreement. Later, she began to hold protests on Fridays and called on everyone to follow her example. Other activists joined Thunberg, and her action “Friday for Future” became the movement of the same name.

In September, Thunberg spoke at the UN summit on combating climate change. She accused the leaders of countries of inaction, saying that they are interested only in economic growth, while humanity is “in the beginning of mass extinction.”
