OREANDA-NEWS In Rostov Veliky, scientists have found an archaeological sensation — a 10th-century Meryan axe. The corresponding message appeared on the page of the Rostov Kremlin State Museum-Reserve in VKontakte.
In the period from July to September, scientists studied the territories of agricultural lands near the village of Shulets. Their attention was attracted by the settlement of the X-XIII centuries and the burial ground associated with it. During the research, which was attended by employees of the Rostov Kremlin and the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IIMK RAS), dozens of objects made of iron and copper were discovered.
An iron axe with an elongated narrow blade turned out to be unique among them. Its weight was 550 grams. According to the typology of archaeologist Anatoly Kirpichnikov, the find may relate to narrow-bladed axes. Finno-Ugric peoples used similar tools in the early Middle Ages.
"This is a rare find for the Rostov region. Three similar axes were discovered in the excavations of the 1920s at the Sarskoye settlement (VII-X centuries). The axe from Schultz is the first one found outside this settlement," the museum staff noted.
Earlier it was reported that in the Temryuk district of the Krasnodar Territory, plates were unexpectedly found on which there were ancient inscriptions with a love spell and the curse of the Greeks.
