OREANDA-NEWS The Pushkin Institute of the Russian Language has chosen "neural network" as the word of 2023, according to experts, it captures the most relevant trends of the outgoing year, the Institute's press service told RIA Novosti.
"Neural Network" is the word of the year of the Pushkin Institute. Summing up the lexical results of 2023, the experts of the Pushkin Institute unanimously concluded that the most relevant trends of the outgoing year are imprinted in the word "neural network", the message says.
The "neural network" became not just a fashionable scientific "word" devoid of clear content, everyone could work with different models and form their own opinion about their advantages and disadvantages, neural networks such as ChatGPT, YaGPT, Kandinsky, Masterpiece, MidJourney, DeepL, MyHeritage and many others were widely available, the company noted the institute.
In 2023, the word neural network was included in the Spelling academic resource "Academos", which is also no coincidence, this suggests that the frequency of the word in mass media texts exceeded the threshold allowing it to be codified, the press service added.
"The breakthrough in the field of artificial intelligence and the high achievements of generative models have really excited the public. AI capabilities were in the focus of attention in a variety of fields: science, education, art, business, law, journalism," the Pushkin Institute recalled.
The press service explained that, according to Wordstat, in the last month alone, people entered "neural network" about 4 million times into the search bar, the query history shows that the activation of the word falls at the end of 2022 – just at the time when the GPT chatbot was released, in January 2023 there has been a slight decline in interest, and then an increase again, from February to the present, the frequency of use of the word is at a consistently high level.
An appeal to the Medialogy resource showed that in 2023 104,680 messages with the word "neural network" appeared in the media and social networks, for comparison: in 2022 – 33,438 messages, in 2021 – 31,097 messages, the frequency of the word tripled over the year, while in the Russian-speaking segment "The neural network" confidently defeats its closest competitor – the phrase artificial intelligence and the abbreviation AI, the institute stressed.
