OREANDA-NEWS. Implenia has received an order from the Swedish Transport Authority (Trafikverket) to refurbish railway tracks, bridges and tunnels in the heart of Stockholm. Much of the railway infrastructure in Sweden’s capital was built in the 1950s and needs renovating over the next few years. The section in Stockholm Getingmidjan acts as the gateway for all trains coming in from the south of the country, making it one of the busiest railway lines in Sweden. The contract is worth SEK 885 million (approximately CHF 100 million).

Implenia has been asked to upgrade and replace five railway bridges as well as two pedestrian bridges running parallel to the latter. In addition, both the Riddarholmen tunnel, measuring some 120 metres in length, and the approximately 600-metre S?derstr?m tunnel will be refurbished to bring them in line with the latest technical standards. This infrastructure project, already complex in terms of construction logistics, is made even more challenging by the city centre location. Disruption to public and private transport must be kept to a minimum, so Implenia will be making considerable use of the available sea transport options to bring in and take away materials. Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2017 and will take about four years.

“We are proud to be able to demonstrate our extensive expertise in a project like this that is so important to Stockholm,” said Fredrick Bj?rckebaum, CEO of Implenia Sweden at the signing of the contract.
