OREANDA-NEWS. Russian scientists have created a communication system that allows transmitting signals using the effect of reflection from the traces of meteors flying in the Earth's atmosphere. The new system was announced by the deputy director of the Higher School of Applied Physics and Space Technologies of the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) Sergey Zavyalov, TASS reports.

As Sergei Zavyalov said, the signal can be transmitted over a distance of up to 1.5 thousand kilometers. Such a large signal radius can be used over vast territories, for example, in the Arctic. The scientist explained that mainly meteor radio communication is used in those hard-to-reach places where ordinary cellular or satellite communication does not work.

To cover the entire vast territory of the Arctic, including the water area of the Northern Sea Route, only three such communication stations need to be built.

Sergey Makarov, scientific director of the Higher School of Applied Physics and Space Technologies of SPbPU, noted that the new system turned out to be compact. It only needs a laptop, an antenna and a power amplifier.

The studies are planned to be completed by the end of 2021, in order to then launch the serial production of meteor communication stations.
